A new text-based artwork, commissioned and produced by Onward Arts, has been installed this week in the corridor of the Barry Building. The words and phrases are direct quotes from hospital staff shared with Onward Arts in response to the theme of Emotional Touchstones. This theme has guided Onward Arts’ staff arts programme, as a means to think personally about the 6Cs – care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment.
The panel brings together words and phrases ‘collected’ by Mary Hooper and Liz Orton during drop-in workshops during which staff spoke about how their personal and professional lives overlap. The panel was designed and produced by Mary Hooper and Liz Orton of Onward Arts.
This is a poster created from all the things that you told us about what ‘touchstones’ means to you and their value in your personal and professional lives.Â
The background is a layered map of the Sussex County Hospital and the Princess Royal.

We visited the hospital yesterday (May 19th 2015) and walked around the main circulation areas looking out for potential exhibition spaces for staff arts. We identified a few possibilities – here are some pictures, see if you can recognise the spaces. The plan is to host some pop-up exhibitions of staff art in the short term, and to commission some other staff works for longer term display next year. We look forward to collaborating with you all, and will be in touch via email shortly.
